Members of the Powell River community will have a chance to view and comment on bill designs for the new Powell River Dollars, and to learn about the project of the Powell River Money Society (PRMS) at an Art Show and Information Night on Tuesday May 29th, 5:15 - 8:30 pm, in the Poplar Room at the PR Recreation Complex.Formal presentations will be made at 5:30 and 7pm, with organizers on hand throughout the event.
Powell River Dollars are a form of "complementary currency" designed to be spendable at a variety of businesses in Powell River. The concept of local money has already been implemented around the world, and using the Community Way model that underlies Powell River Dollars has resulted in increased donations to local non-profit groups and projects.

Businesses, non-profit groups and members of the public are invited to explore this proven opportunity to keep money circulating and working within Powell River. Admission to the Art Show and Information Night is free. Complimentary light refreshments will be available.

"I'm happy to say that the Powell River Chamber supports the Powell River Dollar initiative," said Cory Carr, treasurer of the  Powell River Chamber of Commerce. "It creates extra capital that can continue to fuel business while regular cash may be tight. It encourages local spending, because the dollars flow in and out of exclusively local businesses. The successfulness of the program will depend on the community's willingness to adopt and use it regularly."

PRMS grew out of a Local Economy weekend event sponsored by Transition Town Powell River in September of  2011. Over the past eight months members of PRMS have been working to bring the Powell River Dollar into existence. The group is currently waiting for registration confirmation from the BC Societies Register.

Active members of PRMS include Bruce Finlay, Kevin Wilson, Mischa Brooks-Thoma, Rob Higgin, Sean Melrose and Marian Kemp. Interested individuals are welcome to become part of this initiative to take back control of our economic lives.
